Characteristics And Operating Principle Of Surge Arresters

Oct 19, 2026 Leave a message

AC gapless metal-oxide surge arresters feature excellent non-linear voltage-current characteristics. Their advantages include rapid response, the absence of follow current, high discharge capacity, low residual voltage, strong overvoltage suppression capabilities, resistance to pollution and aging, and suitability for use at any altitude. Furthermore, they boast a simple, gapless, and hermetically sealed structure, ensuring a long service life.

Under normal system operating voltage, the surge arrester remains in a high-resistance state, allowing only a microampere-level current to pass. When subjected to high-current overvoltage, it transitions to a low-resistance state, thereby limiting the residual voltage across the arrester.

Scope of Application: AC gapless metal-oxide surge arresters are designed to protect the insulation of AC power transmission and transformation equipment from damage caused by lightning overvoltages and switching overvoltages. They are suitable for providing overvoltage protection for transformers, transmission lines, power distribution panels, switchgear, electricity metering boxes, vacuum switches, shunt compensation capacitors, rotating electrical machines, and semiconductor devices.
